Our Budding Book Worms

Let's nuture a love of reading with a club for our budding bookworms.
Whatever type of reader your child is, joining Renaissance Readers can help foster a love of reading and provide a wonderful way to get families together to fellowship.  According to research from the Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University, students who participate in summer reading programs after kindergarten, first and second grade are less likely to be held back in future years, and middle school students who read four or five books during the summer experienced gains in fall reading achievement comparable to attending summer school.  Let's use this study as a basis to accelerate our children's reading throughout the year.

Book clubs teach valuable skills.
What's the right age for a book club?  Any age is the right age with the right participation level that is appropriate for the groups age.  Being a member of Renaissance Readers will help to teach valuable reading skills for understanding, relating reading to personal experience, how to participate in a discussion by taking turns and respecting the opinion of others.

Building parent-child bonds.
Parent-child book clubs provide parents with the unique opportunity to build conversation and communication.  When children and parents read and discuss books together it sends a powerful message to the children that their thoughts and opinions are important.  Through group discussions with peers, children will learn to think beyond "I liked it" or "I didn't like it, they will search for deeper richer opinions to bring to the group.  Lighting a fire for children to read and think more.
